Flight compensation from Stockholm Arlanda Airport

  • IATA ARN / ICAO ESSA, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, some 37 km north of the city between Stockholm and Uppsala.
  • Sweden's largest airport at roughly 25 million passengers a year, with four passenger terminals numbered 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • The Arlanda Express reaches Stockholm Central in 18 minutes; other trains stop here too but add a station access charge.

Arlanda is Sweden's main international airport and the base for SAS and Norwegian operations in the country, handling domestic trunk routes to Gothenburg and the north alongside European and long-haul services. The terminals are spread out: 4 and 5 sit close together, while 2 and 3 are a walk or a short shuttle away, and the split matters when you are moving between them under time pressure. Rail access is excellent but priced in two tiers, with the express service and the cheaper regional trains using the same underground platforms.

Your passenger rights

Sweden applies Regulation (EC) 261/2004 as an EU member state, covering every departure from Arlanda and arrivals flown by EU carriers. Domestic Swedish flights and Nordic routes sit in the €250 band, most European destinations in the €400 band, and long-haul in the €600 band, measured on arrival delay rather than departure. Compensation claims in Sweden are commonly taken to the National Board for Consumer Disputes, which shares its initials with the airport code, while the Swedish Transport Agency acts as the enforcement body for the Regulation itself. A three-year limitation period is normally applied.

Tips for claiming

If you are rebooked onto a flight from a different terminal, allow real time for the transfer, and note that a missed departure caused by the airline's own late rebooking is still the airline's problem. Keep the boarding pass of the flight you did not take as well as the one you eventually flew, since both are needed to establish the length of the delay. For a cancelled evening flight, ask for hotel accommodation before leaving the terminal: reimbursement afterwards is possible but far slower than having the airline book it directly.
