Departures from Hamburg are protected by EC 261/2004 whichever airline you fly. Short routes to Munich, Amsterdam or London pay €250 and longer intra-EU flights €400 when you land three or more hours late. The duty of care starts earlier than that: meals and refreshments are due after two hours of waiting on short flights, three hours on medium-haul and four hours on long-haul, plus a hotel and transfers whenever an overnight wait cannot be avoided.
Tips for claiming
Because of the 23:00 curfew, late evening arrivals that slip can be diverted to Hannover or Bremen, and the airline must then bring you to Hamburg at its own expense, by coach if necessary. Ask the crew where that coach departs from and keep your boarding pass. If you paid for a seat, a bag or a meal on a flight that was cancelled and you took the refund, those extras should be refunded as well.
