Copenhagen Airport

Flight compensation from Copenhagen Airport

  • IATA CPH / ICAO EKCH, Copenhagen Airport at Kastrup, about 8 km from the city centre on the island of Amager.
  • The busiest airport in the Nordic countries at roughly 30 million passengers a year, and the principal hub of SAS.
  • Metro and mainline trains reach Copenhagen Central in about 13 minutes, and Malmö in Sweden in roughly 20 via the Øresund link.

Copenhagen is the Nordic region's main international gateway, built around SAS's hub operation and a large Norwegian base, with long-haul services to North America and Asia layered on top of a dense Scandinavian and European network. It is unusually integrated with rail: the airport station serves both the metro and cross-border trains into southern Sweden, which makes ground alternatives genuinely practical during disruption. Terminals 2 and 3 handle almost all scheduled traffic and share a single connected building.

Your passenger rights

Denmark is an EU member state, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 applies to all departures from Copenhagen and to arrivals operated by EU carriers, SAS and Norwegian among them. Short Scandinavian hops usually fall in the €250 band, intra-European routes in the €400 band, and transatlantic or Asian services in the €600 band once you land three hours behind schedule. The Danish enforcement body is the national civil aviation and railway authority, which handles EC 261 complaints against airlines operating from Danish airports. Danish limitation periods for these claims are generally treated as three years.

Tips for claiming

SAS has changed alliance and ownership in recent years, but the airline that operated your flight is still the one that owes the compensation, whatever the loyalty programme now says. When a short Scandinavian flight is cancelled, ask about the train: airlines can and do re-route passengers to Malmö or Gothenburg by rail, and accepting it does not remove a compensation claim that has already arisen. Winter de-icing delays are common but rarely long enough on their own to cross three hours, so check the actual arrival time before assuming you have no claim.
