Flight compensation from Budapest Airport

  • IATA BUD / ICAO LHBP, Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, about 16 km south-east of the city.
  • Around 17 million passengers a year through a single active terminal, Terminal 2, since Terminal 1 closed to scheduled traffic.
  • Largest base of Wizz Air, with no legacy national carrier since Malév ceased operations in 2012; the 100E bus runs direct to the city centre.

Budapest is the clearest example in the region of an airport rebuilt around low-cost carriers after losing its flag airline: Wizz Air and Ryanair together account for a large share of seats, with legacy carriers connecting to their own hubs. That structure means most itineraries are point-to-point, and a cancellation rarely offers an easy same-airline alternative later the same day. There is still no rail link, so ground access depends on the direct 100E bus and local services from the metro.

Your passenger rights

Hungary is an EU member state, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 covers all departures from Budapest and arrivals operated by EU carriers, which includes Wizz Air and Ryanair. Most routes are shorter than 1,500 km and therefore in the €250 band, with €400 for the longer European and North African services. Where the airline has no other flight that day, its obligation to re-route at the earliest opportunity extends to buying you a seat on a competitor, and it must feed and accommodate you meanwhile. Enforcement in Hungary is handled through the consumer protection authority for the Budapest region, and a two-year limitation period is commonly applied to these claims.

Tips for claiming

Low-cost airlines will often offer only their own next flight, sometimes two or three days out; ask in writing for re-routing on another carrier and keep the refusal, as it strengthens a claim for the cost of the ticket you had to buy yourself. Do not let a customer service agent convert your claim into a voucher without saying so: accepting travel credit can be argued as settling the case. Because the Hungarian window is shorter than in most of the region, aim to file within months rather than years of the flight.
