Wizz Air launched from Budapest in 2004 and built its business on connecting Central and Eastern Europe with Western European labour markets, later adding leisure routes to Italy, Spain, the Gulf and the Caucasus. It runs one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in Europe and operates dozens of bases from Katowice and Bucharest to Rome Fiumicino, Vienna and Abu Dhabi over the years. Everything beyond the seat is sold separately, and the airline pushes customers strongly towards its own app and WIZZ subscription products.
Wizz Air's Hungarian and Maltese airlines are EU carriers, so EC 261/2004 covers their flights both out of and into the European Union, including routes to non-EU countries such as Albania, Georgia or the United Arab Emirates. Its many sectors above 1,500 km inside Europe, for example Bucharest to London or Budapest to the Canary Islands, fall in the 400 EUR band rather than the 250 EUR one. Flights operated by Wizz Air UK from British airports are assessed under UK261 instead, with the same three-tier structure in pounds.
Wizz Air's first offer is often credit loaded into your WIZZ account at a bonus rate; accepting it does not extinguish your right to cash under Article 7 unless you sign a settlement that says so, so read the wording before clicking. File through the claim form in the app or website and quote the WIZZ confirmation number, since the airline has applied handling charges to submissions arriving from claim firms it has not verified. Screenshot the flight status page while the delay is running, because Wizz Air's schedules are frequently retimed and the original departure time can disappear from your booking afterwards.
