TAP Air Portugal is the country's flag carrier and has turned Lisbon into a compact and efficient gateway between Europe, Brazil, West Africa and North America. It serves more Brazilian cities than any other European airline and offers a stopover programme that lets passengers break the journey in Lisbon or Porto at no extra fare. Regional and thinner routes are flown by TAP Express under contract with Portugália and other operators.
TAP is an EU carrier, so EC 261/2004 applies to every departure from an EU airport and, because of the airline's licence, also to flights arriving in Portugal from Brazil, the United States or Africa. Lisbon to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Luanda is well over 3,500 km, which places those cases in the 600 EUR band once you land 4 hours or more behind schedule. If TAP cancels and you accept a refund instead of rerouting, the fixed compensation is still due on top of the ticket money.
Claims must start on TAP's own customer support form, and the airline typically issues a case number beginning with a letter code that you should quote in every follow-up. Missed connections in Lisbon are the most common TAP scenario: on a single booking the delay is measured at your final destination, so a short delay out of Porto that costs you the Sao Paulo flight can still be a 600 EUR case. If TAP does not answer within roughly two months, escalate to ANAC, the Portuguese civil aviation authority, which handles EC 261 complaints for flights departing Portugal.
