KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has operated continuously since 1919 and merged with Air France in 2004 to form Air France-KLM, keeping its own brand, hub and management. Its whole model depends on transfer traffic at Schiphol, where a compact single-terminal layout allows short connections between European feeder flights and long-haul departures to Asia, Africa and the Americas. KLM Cityhopper flies the thinner European routes with Embraer jets under KL flight numbers.
KLM is an EU carrier, so EC 261/2004 covers its departures from Schiphol and other EU airports and its arrivals from outside the Union, such as Nairobi, Jakarta or Mexico City. Long-haul delays of 4 hours or more into Amsterdam are 600 EUR cases, while a short Cityhopper sector like Amsterdam to Brussels or Hamburg is a 250 EUR one at 3 hours. Schiphol capacity and ground-handling shortages are common causes, and problems attributable to the airline's own contracted handlers do not normally qualify as extraordinary circumstances.
Use KLM's own EU 261 claim page and enter the booking code plus each passenger's ticket number; flights numbered KL but flown by KLM Cityhopper go through the same channel, so you do not need a separate claim. Because the hub is built on tight transfers, always ask for the arrival time at your final destination in writing, since that figure and not the Schiphol delay decides your band. If KLM disputes the cause, the Dutch enforcement body ILT can be asked to review the file, and the airline is known to settle once a documented arrival time is on the table.
