ITA Airways

ITA Airways flight delay or cancellation compensation

  • IATA AZ / ICAO ITY, operating since October 2021 as successor to Alitalia.
  • Hub at Rome Fiumicino, with a secondary base at Milan Linate.
  • Part-owned by Lufthansa Group, which brought a move from SkyTeam to Star Alliance.

ITA Airways is Italy's flag carrier, created by the state to take over Alitalia's core operations with a smaller fleet and network. It flies short-haul Airbus A220s and A320neos across Europe and long-haul A330neos and A350s to North America, South America and Asia.

Your passenger rights

ITA Airways is a new legal entity, so EC 261 claims against it cover only flights it operated itself; old Alitalia claims went into the airline's insolvency estate and cannot be redirected to ITA. On current flights the usual bands apply: 250 EUR within Italy and to nearby countries, 400 EUR on most European routes, and 600 EUR to New York, São Paulo or Tokyo.

Tips for claiming

Italian handling and ATC strikes are frequent and legally sensitive: a national strike by third parties is usually an extraordinary circumstance, while a strike by ITA's own staff normally is not, so note in your claim exactly who was striking. Submit through ITA's online claim form first, then escalate to ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, if the airline goes quiet.
