Iberia Express

Iberia Express flight delay or cancellation compensation

  • IATA code I2, ICAO code IBS, based at Madrid Adolfo Suarez Barajas and operating from Terminal 4.
  • Spanish airline launched in 2012 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Iberia within International Airlines Group.
  • Low-cost short-haul carrier on an all-Airbus A320-family fleet, combining domestic and European leisure routes with feeder traffic for Iberia's long-haul flights.

Iberia Express was created in 2012 to fly Iberia's short-haul routes at lower cost while keeping full integration with the Madrid hub. It serves the Balearics, the Canary Islands and Spanish mainland cities alongside European destinations such as Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin and Naples, all timed to connect in Terminal 4. Tickets are sold through Iberia channels, seats earn Iberia Plus points and baggage is checked through to the final destination, which makes it far more connected than a typical low-cost airline.

Your passenger rights

Iberia Express is a Spanish licensed carrier, so EC 261/2004 applies to all of its flights, which depart almost exclusively from EU airports. On its own network the amount is 250 EUR up to 1,500 km, covering Madrid to Barcelona, Palma or Lisbon, and 400 EUR on longer sectors such as Madrid to the Canary Islands, Tenerife included. The decisive point is connections: if a delayed I2 flight on a single booking makes you miss an Iberia long-haul departure, compensation is calculated on the distance to your final destination and often reaches 600 EUR.

Tips for claiming

Claims for I2 flights are handled through Iberia's customer service channels, so quote the Iberia locator code but state clearly that the operating carrier was Iberia Express, otherwise the file can be bounced between the two brands. Save the original connection times shown on your itinerary: the airline sometimes argues that the minimum connecting time in Terminal 4 was never sufficient, and your booking confirmation is the answer to that. Because the same route may be flown by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum on different days, always check the operator printed on the boarding pass rather than assuming from the flight number.
