Air Europa

Air Europa flight delay or cancellation compensation

  • IATA UX / ICAO AEA, a SkyTeam member since 2007.
  • Hub at Madrid-Barajas Terminal 1, feeding long-haul flights to Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Long-haul fleet built around the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with Boeing 737s on European routes.

Air Europa is a Spanish carrier that grew out of the charter market in the 1980s and now positions Madrid as a bridge between Europe and Latin America. It is controlled by the Globalia group; a takeover by IAG was abandoned in 2024 after competition concerns.

Your passenger rights

Air Europa's transatlantic routes from Madrid to Bogota, Buenos Aires, Lima or Havana all exceed 3,500 km, so a cancellation or an arrival more than three hours late puts the claim in the 600 EUR band under EC 261/2004. The regulation also protects you on the inbound leg into Madrid, because Air Europa is an EU carrier.

Tips for claiming

Most disruptions show up as a missed connection in Madrid rather than a delayed departure, and what matters legally is how late you reached your final destination on the same booking. Keep the reprotection coupon Air Europa issues at the transfer desk, and remember that long waits in Madrid entitle you to meals and, overnight, a hotel. Spanish claims are enforced by AESA.
