airBaltic is the dominant carrier in the Baltics and runs Riga as a compact hub connecting Tallinn, Vilnius and Scandinavian and Finnish cities to the rest of Europe. Standardising on the Airbus A220 simplified its operation but leaves little slack: when one aircraft goes technical, the airline usually has to consolidate flights or cancel rather than substitute a different type.
Your passenger rights
As a Latvian EU carrier, airBaltic is subject to EC 261/2004 on every flight from an EU airport and every flight into the EU. Its network is almost entirely European, so compensation is €250 up to 1,500 km and €400 beyond that, for delays of three hours or more at the destination.
Tips for claiming
If your flight was flown by an airBaltic aircraft and crew on behalf of another airline, the claim normally goes to the airline that sold and controlled the flight rather than to airBaltic, and the flight number tells you which. On its own services, watch for consolidation: when airBaltic merges two thinly booked flights into one, that is a cancellation with rerouting, and short-notice cases carry compensation on top.
